Fly Designer: Jay Sheppard Jay began fishing at age three during WWII for warm-water fish using a cane pole alongside his maternal grandmother in Logan, Ohio. Jay has spent a lot of time fly-fishing the West over the past thirty years, including Yellowstone, Alaska, California, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Idaho and New Mexico. For the past 25+ years , Jay has lived and fished in Maryland and neighboring waters. The Patuxent Special is a fly Jay created in the late 1970s that has caught several species of fresh and saltwater fish: including trout, bass, salmon, carp and walleye in freshwater and bonefish, redfish, and sea trout in saltwater. Other activities have included fisheries conservation, mostly for the Patuxent Special Area and the Lower Savage River. After spending five years in the US Navy including an extensive service in Vietnam, Jay worked as a biologist for the US Fish and Wildlife Service until his retirement in 1995.
